Soil nailing

Hold the slope. Then green it.

Soil nailing reinforces a slope from the inside. Steel bars are drilled and grouted into the ground in a grid, a mesh or shotcrete face ties them together, and the slope becomes a single stable mass. We then hydroseed the face so it looks like a hillside, not a wall.

Slope reinforced with soil nails and mesh

The method

What soil nailing is

A ground reinforcement method for cut slopes, excavations and existing unstable slopes. Holes are drilled into the face at a designed angle and spacing. Steel bars are inserted and grouted. Plates and a mesh or shotcrete layer connect the nail heads.

The nails take the load that would otherwise push the slope out. It needs less space and less concrete than a retaining wall, and it can be built top-down as a cut proceeds.

Uses

Where it is used

  • Cut slopes on hill roads and railways.
  • Excavations next to existing buildings.
  • Repair of distressed retaining walls and reinforced-earth walls.
  • Landslide-prone faces.

The process

How we do it

  1. Survey and designSite investigation, soil parameters, nail length, spacing and angle. Design to the relevant Indian and international codes.
  2. Drill and groutNails installed in a grid from the top down.
  3. FaceMesh with plates, or shotcrete where the design requires it.
  4. DrainageWeep holes and drains so water does not build up behind the face.
  5. GreenHydroseeding over the meshed face, so the slope is stable and vegetated. Slopes and erosion control →

Questions people ask

Straight answers.

Soil nailing or a retaining wall?

Nailing is usually faster, needs less space and less concrete, and suits cuts that are built top-down. Walls suit some soils and some loads better. The site investigation decides.

Can a nailed slope be green?

Yes. A mesh face takes hydroseeding well, and the vegetation hides the mesh within a season.
